An amateur photographer since age 13, Ross has been photographing outdoor subjects for eighteen years. . His travels to Alaska and Florida took him to many of the most beautiful parts of North America. Ross became "hooked" on trying to capture on film the feeling of what it's like to be in such places.
"I came up with the name 'Good Migrations' largely because of my love of birds and bird migration, and also because of my own work; for a period of about 2 1/2 years, I was working seasonally in Alaska during the summer and in Florida during the winter. The lifestyle became seductive: you're outdoors in the field every day, surrounded by incredible beauty and often incredible wildlife. I also love the people associated with the Parks. They are some of the most dedicated, knowledgeable, and interesting people around. I have always had a passionate interest in conservation and wilderness preservation and enjoy combining my work with these efforts."
In 1997 Ross turned semi-pro as a photographer. "I realized the challenge I was undertaking by trying to make it in the nature photography business. One doesn’t acquire a whole lot of capital as a seasonal park ranger to get started. But I’m determined, and if it takes me until I’m 60, I’ll still be happy. It’s difficult to imagine doing anything more exhilarating."
